My proofreading journey.
Until recently, the only proofreading I did was my own work – not a good idea. It’s not easy to spot your own mistakes. For some reason your brain seems to gloss over them. For me, proofreading other people’s work is easy. Mistakes seem to jump out at me. I am frustrated when I read a novel and spot glaring mistakes that their proofreaders haven’t noticed.
Two years ago I applied for, and was successful in, the role of proofreader for a private school. The bulk of the proofreading is school reports and grade cards sent to the parents of our pupils. You would be surprised at the number of mistakes that crop up but teachers are busy and there is much editing to do.
I have undertaken some proofreading courses and am now a qualified proofreader. I am registered with both Upwork and Freelancer and, although this is only the start of my freelancing journey, I have already taken on and completed a couple of roles.
